Beginners

Students on the Beginners' course are welcome to all classes. For an idea of what is covered in the beginners course, check the syllabus page (scroll down to "Beginners' Course syllabus and schedule")

What happens in class?

A normal class starts with a warm-up, and progresses to unarmed exercises and dagger work. After the first hour, the class divides by weapon, those doing the basic training take up the longsword, those taking the alternative semester (rapier, sword and buckler, etc.) pick up those weapons. There usually follows a period of solo weapons training, then pair drills. In the third hour, students may practice freeplay, other weapons, or a range of other activities (as directed by the instructor).

Notes

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the basic class ends at 20:00, the last hour is generally for the seniors to spend one-on-one with the instructor, while everyone else does free training.

When there is no Beginner's Course running, the Tuesday class is run as a normal class.

Fees

All Helsinki training fees are paid to the Finnish Association of Historical Fencing (Suomen Historiallisen Miekkailun Seura ry).

Association annual membership: 40 € (due 2nd January)

Training fee in a 4-month block: 130/210 € (lower free for unemployed and students, payment due 2nd of month)

Training fee for one month: 40/60 € (due 2nd of month)

Single class: 8 €

Make sure you use your own reference number when paying! Every member has received two reference numbers when they joined the school (or later), one for the monthly payments and one for the annual membership payments. If you are a member but do not have two reference numbers, contact the SHMS chairman. (Free tip: new members - go find the bottom half of your membership information slip)

Fees must be paid on time, because the money goes to things like paying for the salle. A standing order is recommended.

Weekend course and beginner's course payments

Pay without a reference number. Include your name as well as the name and date of the course in the message section of the payment form. Like so: "Jane Doe, Capo Ferro rapier 31.1. and 1.2."
